What To Wear When You Babysit
Deciding what to wear when babysitting can be tough, especially when you’re unsure of what activities you’ll be doing with the kids. Some kids like to play outside and get dirty, while others prefer to stay inside and play games; then there’s the whole issue of dressing to make a good impression on the parents. You don’t want to come across as unprofessional, but you also don’t want to look like you’ve tried too hard—we get it, and we’re here to help you put together a basic babysitting outfit.
Step One: Pick a shirt.
Generally speaking, you’ll want to wear a fairly modest shirt that you don’t mind getting messy in. I tend to wear darker, more neutral colors in case of kid spillage, boo boos or boogers. These colors tend to hide stains fairly well, and are very easy to style with a sweater on cooler days. But, if you’d prefer to add a little more personality to your outfit, you can apply the same rules.
Step Two: Pick a pair of pants.
I tend to gravitate towards wearing jeans while a babysit; they are comfortable and easy to work in, and they don’t stain easily. If you’re not a big fan of jeans, you’ll want to wear pants that you can comfortably work and play in. If you’re meeting a family for the first time, I highly recommend staying away from leggings or yoga pants—these are a little too casual for a first impression, and you want to make a good first impression to make sure you get hired!
Step Three: Shoes, Shoes, Shoes
Picking the right shoes to wear to babysit is absolutely vital. How are you going to run around and play outside if you’re feet are aching from wearing inappropriate footwear? Wear a pair of shoes that you are comfortable moving around in; I tend to gravitate towards my beat up pair of purple converse since they pair nicely with neutral colors and jeans.
As you continue to babysit for certain families, you may find that it’s totally acceptable to dress more casually to babysit. Really, every situation is unique and you’ll need to assess each situation and the appropriate clothes to wear for those situations. Remember that babysitting is a job, and first impressions do matter; good luck!
